October 18 ~ Our Attitude
โ€œWe cannot change our past. We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.โ€
~ Charles R. Swindoll

Portrait of Charles R. Swindoll โ€” pastor and author

Born on this day in El Campo, Texas, pastor and author Charles R. Swindoll (1934โ€“) has become a guiding voice of encouragement for millions through his radio ministry Insight for Living. His gift lies in reminding us that faith and optimism are living choices โ€” refreshed and renewed each day.

โ€œThe remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace,โ€ he said โ€” a truth he carried with quiet strength during his time in the Marines and through decades of teaching, writing, and pastoral care.

Known for his warmth and gentle wit, Swindoll once reflected, โ€œOften one seeks greener grass on the other side, only to find when he gets there itโ€™s not edible. Sometimes, however, it is. But if the grass is greener, you can bet their water bill is higher.โ€

After 23 years leading the First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton, he became President of Dallas Theological Seminary in 1994. Author of more than 100 books and host of countless broadcast hours, Swindoll continues to remind us how to live with perspective and gratitude.

Even now, his truth still echoes: โ€œLife is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.โ€
