— Nils Lofgren
Talented guitarist and songwriter Nils Hilmer Lofgren (1951– ) was born on this day in Chicago and raised in Maryland. Classically trained on accordion, he switched to guitar as a teenager, blending technical skill with emotional fire. At just 19, Nils joined Neil Young’s band Crazy Horse, contributing haunting piano and searing guitar to the legendary 1970 album After the Gold Rush.
His collaboration with Neil spanned decades—playing on albums like Tonight’s the Night and Trans, and offering trusted creative insight few musicians ever earned. “Nils played with a lot of soul,” Neil said. “He could hear things.”
In the early ’70s, Nils formed the band Grin, gaining a cult following with passionate songwriting and blistering live shows. His solo career soon followed—rich with albums like Cry Tough and Acoustic Live, both loved for their intimacy and fire.
Then in 1984, fate called. When Steven Van Zandt went to pursue other ventures, Nils joined Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band during the explosive Born in the U.S.A. tour. His stage presence—twirling spins and trampoline solos—brought an electric joy. Whether in a stadium or a small hall, Nils performed with reverence: “I still play every show like it’s my last one. That hasn’t changed since I was 17.”
With over 50 years of music and humility, Lofgren remains a bridge between eras—grounded, gifted, and generous. “Be true to the song, be true to the moment,” he said. “I want to put heart and soul into every note I play.”
Let Nils inspire you to live your truth, leap with purpose, and create with fearless courage and quiet kindness.
