~ Jean Kirkpatrick (Women for Sobriety)
Celebrating Dr. Jean Kirkpatrick, founder of Women for Sobriety (WFS), and her call to look beyond the tight circle of self,
toward something steady and spiritual. She founded Women for Sobriety in 1975 after years
of alcohol abuse, and her New Life program went on to support thousands of women throughout the
world in recovery and renewed self-respect.
Kirkpatrick’s approach centered on empowerment. Her New Life program helped women stop drinking, take charge of their lives, and grow in courage and self-confidence.
“Maturity,” she said, “is when we discover ourselves and remake ourselves from our own thoughts. Maturity is when we live by the truths that are in our heart and soul, truths we believe to be right for us.”
Inspired by philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, who wrote that nothing brings peace but oneself, Kirkpatrick created 13 Statements of Acceptance, affirmations for empowerment that help change negative thinking into positive thinking.
With mutual-help, women can recover and soar. Abstinence and spirituality are key components to success.
“Life can be ordinary or it can be great,” she believed. Given enthusiasm, passion, and a plan, each day can become a celebration.
Turn outward. The spiritual will meet you there.
