November 16 ~ Matter of the Heart
Courage is not a matter of muscle, but a matter of the heart.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

Square watercolor of two Uttarakhand village women embracing a tree in the forest (Chipko movement) In the early 1970s, villagers in the Himalayan foothills of what is now Uttarakhand, India, stood together in quiet courage. Inspired by Gandhi’s nonviolence, they began to “chipko.” To embrace the trees, so that axes could not fall.

The first widely noted action took place near Mandal in 1973, led by Gandhian organizer Chandi Prasad Bhatt. A year later, in Reni, Gaura Devi and village women faced down loggers by circling the forest like a living garland. “Brothers, this forest is our mother,” she said. “Shoot us first, then cut the trees.” Their steadfast witness turned a local struggle into a movement.

Chipko was more than ecology, it was community wisdom. The people knew that cutting mountain forests invites erosion, floods, and loss of life. With songs and resolve, they chose protection over profit, stewardship over haste.

The spirit of Chipko continues to teach: hold close what sustains you, let wisdom steady your courage, and when the world asks for your heart, answer softly and stand firm.
